Calcined alumina is used in many industries, including structural and technical ceramics, polishing compounds, fillers, refractories, paint, and thermal spray powders. The properties of the alumina can be controlled by adjusting the calcination time and temperature. Calcined alumina grains are usually made up of single platey crystals, and each crystal is theoretically a six-sided disk that's about one-fifth as thick as it is in diameter. Calcined alumina is aluminum oxide that has been heated to temperatures above 1,050 °C (1,900 °F) to remove almost all chemically combined water. This process is called calcination. The resulting alumina has a high melting point, extreme hardness, and high density. It's also very chemically pure, with a Mohs hardness of 9, which is just below diamond's 10
